i'm trying out limewire for my mp3 needs (now that napster is nearly dead) the problem is that when i download a mp3 from limewire, and i go to play it , it is a "real' audio format and not quicktime. whenever i downloaed from napster it was in quicktime format. i looked in the preferences in limewire and found nothing to tell it what format you want. i dont know how to fix it so it downloads and plays in a quicktime format. thank you in advance for your help

check your file exchange control panel. i'm betting that real player changed your .MP3 extension to its stupid program. just set it back to quicktime and you should be fine.

that, and you could always just make an auto-typer for the files that are already marked as belonging to real player.

Demonhood,
Could you elaborate on how to change the RealPlayer .mp3 file back to Quicktime? You mentioned something about an "auto-typer", what is that ? Thanks

Suprz,
What do you think about Limewire? I tried it last night. Downloaded one song and it took forever on my cable modem connection. Almost thought I was back on a 28.8 line. I know Napster wasn't that slow.
Maybe it was just that particular file?
Thanks

i onlyhave a 56k modem so everything is slow to me.....but limewire is extremely slow whether you are downloading video or audio. i usually do my downloading when there is something good on television. but it is also very buggy IMHO and it seems to freeze up alot, requiring a hard shut down of my computer. but now with napster dying, there isnt much left. my ex-wife uses a pc with a cable modem and she said she doesnt have a problem using limewire for everything, MP3's, video, audio, programs etc... she stated it was fast and never freezes...(it figures, it's probably because she is using a pc)

limewire is java based. slow slow slow (most of the time).

if you have files that are already real player files (and MP3s) and you want to change them so quicktime opens em, use File Buddy. i believe you can make an auto-typer from within the program.

an auto-typer changes the file type/creator of a file so that it belongs to a different application. auto-typers serve only one purpose, so they're usually drag n drop in nature.

make sure you've selected Mp3 as the file type in your file exchange control panel. this will ensure that it opens properly. also, you might want to rebuild your desktop after you do all of this, just in case. (hold down command and option at startup, don't release till you get a prompt).

You can go to Kazaa and download songs for free there. They make a windows app similar to napster. This program however has a web based trial site (15 searches).

Just tell your browser to ask before accepting cookies and you should be able to browse, search, and download without any problem. I recently learned about this site and have been downloading for hours. This site is pretty much a web based napster. No app needed.
