Can you use the Apple DVD player w/o the DVD drive?

I have a couple of DVDs ripped into images on my hard drive (yeah lots of space, but worth it). However, when I try to play a DVD in the player, I get a message "Apple DVD player not compatible with this hardware. Error 301"
The solution being, when the DVD drive is in the machine, I can open the player, then select the video on the mounted disk image.
What I want to do: Is there software which can simulate an inserted DVD drive to fool the player? I'd like to watch several movies with two batteries inside (drool) and not have to carry the drive.
Any ideas?

I would be very interested in this as well, because I can barely play one movie on a battery, usually I have to roll over to a second on my Ti just to watch one. If I could rip my DVD's and then watch a bunch on my two batteries, that would rock...

Yeah, it would even help TiBook owners.
But, if it matters, I've got a Pismo 500.
