DV and Firewire problems

I have a Canon Elura mini DV camcorder hooked up to a Pismo (500mhz) Powerbook running FCP (1.2.5). System 9.0.4, Firewire 2.4.
The pb fails to see the Camera, it connects (or not) randomly. I have tried disabling extensions, etc. The camera works fine with the same cable on a G4...
Anybody similar problems and/or suggestions?
Thanks.

Hey DoubleDutch,
Did you try to just running the base extensions for 9.0.4 in the Extention Manager? At work they had the same problem on a PowerBook as you and this seemed to remedy the situation. We didn't find which extension was the culprit, but we just added one "non-9.0.4" extension at a time to make sure it was not that one til we got the system back the form we wanted it.
Keep me informed of your progress.

Is your camera plugged into the mains rather than running off battery? Friends have had this problems and it's been fixed by switching to mains power.

Thanks for your suggestions. I did try a 904 base set (extensions) but that did not make much difference. Getting the connection going was as unreliable as before.
Altough I have not tested it thouroughly the power mains *did* make a difference. Once the connection is made, the powerbook will recognize the camera even after "sleep", after the camera has been turned off and on or has been disconnected, and when the camera is on battery power. Just getting the powerbook to recognize thye camera seems to be the problem.
One more thing I tried (suggested in another post here) is removing iMovie. Apparently iMovie and FCP don't live well together on the same machine.
Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.

Ive been asking around an it seems that for many people with various powerbook and Dv camcorder combinations, both the computer and the camera need to be plugged into the mains power before either are turned on.
It's solved a number of odd errors, problems and hiccoughs.

I have the exact same problem. I use a digital 8 camera, but the problem is the same.

the only thing that seems to help me getting FW working was holding "T" key while booting up.

From Apple's website:
Canon Elura (NTSC)
This camera needs the DV Tuner 2 and CMP Scripts to optimize device control over FireWire with Final Cut Pro 1.2.5. These are included with FinalCut Pro 1.2.5 installer and updater. Once installed, locate the folder called "Extras" and you will find "DV Tuner 2" and "CMP Override". Drag these two files into the Final Cut Pro Plugins folder before launching Final Cut Pro. These Scripts should NOT be installed when using other DV devices, unless specified.
With Canons, they also need to be set to "Firewire Basic" in the preferences under video settings.

Just hooking up the camera and starting FCP does not work. I have to reboot with the Firewire cable attched, that seems to do the trick. Firewire settings in FCP don't matter, both the normal and the basic setting work.
Thanks
