I am working on a project converting a program on a Mac to a web based application. The original application is some sort of speech program where you can click on hot spots and it will play a QuickTime audio file. The program also allows the user to start a clip in the middle.

Example: "This is the speech in a video clip."

If they just click the LISTEN button, they will get the whole sentence but if the word "speech" was a hotspot and they clicked that, they would hear: "speech in a video clip."

I want to know if it's possible to stream like this as well. Is it possible to start in the middle of a QuickTime clip and if so, how would I do this?

If it's not possible, how would I go about converting these QT audio files to REAL audio. The people I am doing this project for already have REAL Audio streaming software. I figure if I can't start a clip in the middle, I might as well cut it at the various points and make it REAL Audio.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions or want clarifcation you can email med at: chuckie@ucla.edu

Thanks in advance.

The easiest solutions would be to have separate files for each word. (Provided all sentences are as small as that...). And then a full clip of all the words. Should't consume too much server-space.

Alternativly you could look into the media scripting possibilities of QT. QT is a powerful language, and I'm sure this sort of feature is well within reach. It's beyond me though, as I haven't looked into it yet...

I think it would be cool to use a jpg image of the sentence instead of linked text, and use the map function in HTML, or an equivalent in javascript to seperate the link to the audio for each word. It would look much better I think.

Also, if you don't already know, RealProducer (download from real.com) can convert audio files (or record them through Sound Manager if a file isn't supported), and save them as RealAudio files. I haven't used it in a while but it should be pretty easy to convert your Quicktime (.mov, right?) files.
