...didn't Apple buy the software...do they now sell it - I can't see it on their web site. Or is there another Mpeg exporter out there somewhere that I can use with Premiere or Videoshop? Thanks.

You might look into Terran's Media Cleaner Pro. I believe it can do MPEG export with or without an extra hardware card.

MCP 4.0 can definitely export mpeg files. MCP has a nice interface that makes it really easy while still being powerful for you to optimize your video files. You can also save Quicktime Streaming and Realplayer files for internet use. If your going to get serious with DV, then you need MCP.

Until Quicktime 5 is released you only have 3 choices I believe.
- Media Cleaner (pro) provides Mpeg 1 support but with limited controls like like fps/size etc... so you are stuck with 2/3 formats...way enough for web related video
- If you need mpeg2 then you could update the Heuris export engine that is in media Cleaner pro to Version 2 and get full Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 export.
-Or you could use Astarte Mpeg which is not available anymore since they ve been bought by Apple and will be included in Quicktime5.
-Heuris also sells Mpeg power pro...very powerfull and probably the best mpeg encoder available on the mac... but I believe their version 2 starts ar $500

I looked at Digital MediaPress, and it looks like a good solution for the iMovie2/iMac video non-pro who wants to archive their projects on DVD-RAM. Does that sound correct? Why shouldn't one wait to see what Quicktime 5 will bring, as mentioned in a previous post? A solution that allowed eith MPEG-1 or -2 compression in case you wanted to burn videocd's would be ideal. Does any one product do that?

There is a free MPEG encoder out there, besides the shareware MPEG Exporter...

Thanks for the tip on the free MPEG encoder program -- I accessed the site once, but haven't been able to get it again. Is there a separate shareware program available? It seems that PC's have a bunch of relatively cheap options (Ulead, Videowave, DVDIt) for software MPEG export, but there isn't something comparable for Mac's.

i've tried MCP 4 at a friends, but it converts my mpeg1 clips to DV or MOV without sound. i may be asking for the world but is there a program that will allow sound and video to be converted to DV in one click (ok, maybe two)?
thanks

Apple has acquired Astarte but they will be including MPEG1-2 support in Quicktime.

As for MC4 it has now become Cleaner 5.0 with more MPEG options available. Though you have to upgrade to MPEG Charger or MPEG SuperCharger for MPEG audio/video separation. Separation of the streams is required for making DVD-Video.

before converting your movie, MCP decode mpeg1 with quicktime, which doesn't allow to recompress mpeg movies with sound... (it will be fixed in QT5).
You can separate video and souns with a tool called mpegspliter available with tha Sparkle Pack (very old software)... and then you can convert audio to aiff and recompress the movie with sound.
