In putting together this system, I realized that the Powerbook only has one firewire port. We were planning on using the ext firewire drive to store our video clips. So now the conundrum, how can we firewire in the clips from the DV cam and store them on the EXT HD with only one port. w/o having to first put them on the internal HD then unplug the cam and plug up the ext hard drive and copy them over. Add to that, we want to dump out our edited video using the Hollywood DV bridge to an analog VHS. we come up with the same problem.

My theories on a solution are- a firewire hub! But, this made me wonder if the EXT firewire HD's performance would be diminished going through a hub as opposed to the direct firewire port. Will it's performance be diminished enough to make it unusable for DV capture and playback? Will any of the firewire peripherals performance be compromised going through a hub?

how about these..?

Belkin Firewire 6 port hub or

Firewire cardbus adapter?

Lacie 7200 EXT HD

Thanks for your help!

It is my limited understanding that some firewire hard drives will capture video from the camera directly, no computer involved. This is what I was told at MWNY at the Que! counter. I do not know how well this method works, but if it's true and as smooth as I would hope for, than it should save you much hassle.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

This a very important issue!!!!! I just realized that i would be facing the same problem!!! but I do know a firewire hub depending on what kind will have a effect on quality.

keep me posted as well.

P.S even if there is a firewire harddrive that communicates with the camera and you input all your footage then how are you going to out put it via fire wire?

On the LaCie drives we have here, there are two 6-pin FireWire ports. One connects via a 6-to6-pin cable to the computer, the other you can connect via a 4-to-6-pin cable to your camera. Importing works flawlessly in iMovie and Final Cut Pro--you can control the camera with your computer just like it was plugged into the back. No need to get a FireWire hub, just get an external HD with two FW ports.

Or do you already have an external HD, with only one port? Is it possible to exchange or upgrade it? I would think that would be cheaper than getting a hub.

I've got a SONY TRV900 tied to a Maxtor 3000DV tied to a 667Ti and haven't had any problems downloading video. I'm still editing so I haven't tried it the other way yet. If there's a problem, I can always transfer the clip to my 30G drive and then upload it (at least I think I can).
