Sorry, I know this is a damn old question but I couldn't help it.
I have a copy of iMovie (yeah, just got it) and I want to upgrade to iMovie2, but there were no updadtes from 1 to 2 at Apple's website.

Is there an update available somewhere?

iMovie 2.x.x for OS X is available for free download. And iMovie 2 is available for free with any computer after sometime last summer or fall.

But no. There is no free upgrade from iMovie 1 to iMovie 2. You can purchase iMovie 2 for $49.95 from Apple.

I know. I was frustrated when I found that out too. But I haven't minded so much since I bought OS X and they let us uprage to iMovie 2 for free.
