I have downloaded a couple of AVI's on LImwire (Gnutella Network), and Qucktime was unable to play them. I got a message saying it neede more software but it wasn't available on the server. When it plays, all it is, is a white screen with some sound every once in awhile. Any ideas or suggestions on something else that will play AVI's? Thanks

Quicktime 5.x will play some versions of AVI's, BUT you may need to get additional codecs. I thought AVI support was built-in to QT5, but I was mistaken. This TIL here cleared it up for me.

Seems the problem is that there are about 10 versions of the AVI codec that can be used on Windows to create QT media. The solution is to get the version of the codec that matches what the media was created with.

In my case - this past weekend I needed to access some AVI's for a project at work. Got the white screen and audio at first. Installed Indeo 5.x codec and still got the white screen. Then I did a get info on the movie and it turns out the movie was generated with Indeo 3.2 codec. Once I installed that version of Indeo codec I was able to view the codec. The indeo codecs are available at Apple in the QT section.

Hope that helps.
