From within IE (OS X), when I click on an AVI movie link, I hear the sound but see no movie!! Quicktime complains that a component is missing, but says that its not available for download. It works fine under OS 9... has anyone got an ideas please??

AVI files can be very problematic. If you were able to play the file in 9 it should play in OS X.
First, see if you have the necessary codec needed to play the file. I'm in OS 9, so the procedure might be a little different.

In OS 9:
Open QT Player
Go Edit > Preferences > QT Preferences
This will open a window titled QuickTime Settings. Go to Update Check, and "check" the radio button for 'Update and install additional QT software', and click Update.
In this new window, 'QuickTime Component Install', click Custom. Scroll down to Indeo Video and see if there is an update available. If there is, check Indeo Video and click Update Now.
Quit QT and your browser. Do a Restart before trying to play the file.

Any luck?

Thanks for your input... I've downloaded all the 'extra' QT bits, restarted, but still get an error "Quicktime needs an extra component to play this video - unfortunately its not available on the server". Like I said, the frustrating thing is that it works in OS 9. Any more ideas???

Just because it says it's not available doesn't mean it's not there. That's why you have to do the 'Custom' install, Indeo Video is not a 'standard' component.
You said that you played the SAME AVI in OS 9? You have to understand that not all AVIs are "real" AVIs. As I understand it (and I'm sure someone will shit all over this expaination) an AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) file is a sound and motion picture file that conforms to the Microsoft Windows Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) specification. It is possible to come across an AVI file that doesn't comform to what QT is told and AVI is. That's when you have problems. The one I've seen most often is VBR mp3s inside an AVI (which was never spec'ed for that).
Try playing it through the QT Player.
Open QT Player
Go File > Open URL in New Player (enter the URL of the .avi file. It should look something like - http://www.website.com/folder/movie_name.avi)
Do you get the same error message?

Openinng the URL in a player window yields "you may experience problems playing a video track in #filename# because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue?"
Done the custom install thing.... didn't find any Indeo things though.
This is frustrating!!!

OK, I've been busy surfing and it seems that there is no OS X version of the Indeo Codec. Bummer! Please some one tell me this isn't true! I hope its on a "to do list" somewhere. And in the mean time... M$ Media Player?

Could either of you share the solution to this problem? I would kind of like to know since I'm about ready to move to OS X. Thank.

Sorry. The link is nowhere to be found. Or I would have posted it. Your e-mail is blocked out. So I can't mail you.
You may get some info here though. http://mpeg4.jamby.net/
