Soundsticks use with DVD player

I have a Mac G4 tower and have just upgraded to OS 9.1 to use my new Soundsticks and iSub. They work fine when I put in a CD or am playing mp3's but as soon as I put in a DVD the sound output goes back to the tower's small built in speaker instead. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to download an update of some sort? Please help!
