Hi. I recently decided to use my G4 500 as a jukebox and hooked it up to my harman kardon stereo (with i-tunes as the dj). After a week, the 27 gig drive is almost full of MP3's (I had a huge collection of CD's I was tired of shuffling).

I need more space. But it is specifically for MP3. Not other kind of data or software. I could use my DVD RAM drive but a cartridge is only a couple of gigs per side and I don't want to shuffle disks. What is the least expensive solution? Another internal drive, if so do I need a speedy one or can I buy a cheap one. Fire wire seems more expensive.

Suggestions are welcome :-)

Speed is not an issue for MP3 playback. Buy the biggest internal IDE drive you can afford and install it in the G4, and enjoy. I just bought a 46 gig drive for this purpose. Maxtor makes an 80 gig diamondmax drive.

Heck, buy 2 of them and SoftRaid and have 160 gigs of MP3 storage. That's a lot of music....

At what are you ripping your CD's at? 27 GB is an absurd amount of CD's, you're not going over 192kbps are you, if you are, you are simply wasting space (in my opinion anyway).

I'm ripping at 192 kbps. I find that lower than that, I loose too much sound quality, specially when listenning to classical music.

If you count the OS and a couple of apps and other files I have about 20 gigs left for the MP3's. This is about 5000 to 6000 tracks/songs. At let's say 10 to 20 tracks per album it's about 300 to 600 CD's. I'dont think 600 CD's is an absurd amout of music. But maybe I'm just a music freak :-) I have much more than that to archive.

I told you guys I was tired of dusting and shuffling them. i-tunes (or anyother music software) is a great idea for music lovers living in a small appartment :-)

Yeah, get more internal drives. 5400 rpm drives should be fine for just mp3 playing. Buy it while it's cheap! Keep in mind though, that you will probably have to get an ATA controller if you get more than one extra HD. Don't worry, they're cheap ($100-$150).
