I've got live music from the days I was in a group. It's on audio cassette, it's a live performance and I THINK I can convert it via SoundJam to mp3.

BUT....

I'd like to segment the songs from the live performance.

How would I go about doing this?
Thanks.

You can record the whole tape to disk, then segment it with QuickTime Pro, that'd be a little tedious, but it will get the job done.

Or you can use Ultra-corder. Shareware...

Very easy to use. Start-stop on the parts you want included in each 'song'.

Hello! If you wanna rip MP3's directly from audio cassette, you can use SoundJam MP 2 plus. The new version lets you rip MP3's from the audio in port on the computer. i've never done it myself, but i've read that it works like a charm. Good luck! :-)

Try Coaster http://www.in.tum.de/~rothc/coaster.html to convert you analog (tape) songs to digital files. It will automatically segment the files. Then use an MP3 encoder like SoundJamMP to create the MP3 files. It worked really well for me. You just have to futz with the tape source and connections and experiment to get the best digital-quality files in the end.

i have successfully used a shareware utility called "Coaster" to
record in several tapes and vinyl LPs into the mac, and then edited
the AIFF files into segments using "SoundEdit 16" to burn them onto
CD, and to make MP3 files with.

the COASTER app also has a feature that automatically starts
and stops recording to a new file every time there is a specified
gap of silence in the input -- so you might not actually need the
soundedit software, but being a bit picky, i wanted to get the exact
edit points and do some fade outs and stuff.

i also tried the "ultra--corder", and found that although it was
a bit slicker UI, it wasn't as practical for sound quality, and
continuing to work in the background without getting skips in the
recording as COASTER.

regards,
johnrpenner.

You will likely also want to put an audio mixer (such as the mixer of a 4-track cassette recorder) between the tape deck and the audio in of the computer in order to prevent overloading the audio in port on your Macintosh. I've done this with tons of recordings by my current and former bands and it is a nice way to archive material from the past. One thing I noted is that over the years I've got about 100 cassette tapes of various bands and the like and it would be nice to archive them before the tapes start dying. So this would definetely be a way of doing it. Then there are numerous mastering tools such as t-racks or the like to get things to sound as good as possible.

A search of VersionTracker turns up Ultra Recorder ... maybe that's it?

Anyway, this thread belongs in the Multimedia forum. Transferring...
