Hmmm... I've be waiting... and waiting... and waiting... to buy a new Mac forever... I have an 8500/300 G3 (from 1995)... and... I held off for a while... due to the fact that I was happy... Now I am getting ready for a new system and I defiantly have some major apple concerns... You don't have to sell apple to me in ANY way... I love apple... I just feel a little left out in the cold...
First off...
I do Graphic Design, MIDI, and Digital audio on my 8500 (should I mention that some of my tracks in cubase exceed well over 50 tracks, and it holds up pretty good)... What is apple doing... They have new super fast computers (even the QS 733 is probably MUCH MUCH faster than my 8500 just do to the fact of buss speed)... But what is apple doing... System 10.X looks and seems pretty cool... but... they have a cool computer, that is fast that doesn't seem to have full MIDI OR AUDIO capabilities... Which in all reality is useless to me... We all need a firm commitment from apple to say... YES!!! we are working on fully integrated MIDI support... YES!!! we are working on fully integrated AUDIO support... YES!!! we are working with Steinberg, eMagic, MOTU, etc to make sure when OS X.xx is released that your favorite audio/midi application works...
Right now I am (as well as several other people that I write production with) holding out... I hate spending Tons of $$$$$$ on a system and only hopping it will work in six months with fully integrated dual processing support via OS X and my favorite Audio applications (cubase is the major one)...
I've been holding out for my new system, newest version of cubase (I have 4.x and it works fine for now), haven't bought VST plug-ins for well over a year for the simple fact that I don't want to shell out $150+ for software that might not even work on my new system (do I need to mention that even running system 8.6+ with dual processors causes major crashing when using VST instruments when you have dual processing enabled)... I havn't bought ANY software upgrades for well over a year if I think about it... This isn't good... Up till a year ago... I always was buying the latest software... and now... due to apples quick decission to realease OS X... I am sitting at a stand still... This isn't good for Apple or any component or software company's... If people keep sitting still... Especially the power users.... iBooks and iMacs are neat... But let's face it... The pro AUDIO and MIDI market is much more profitable that selling consumer based computers (yes we do need a consumer computer from apple to stall afloat, but... once the home consumer buys... they keep there computer forever and don't upgrade anything till they want to... or the computer dies)... Let's not forget to mention that pro AUDIO/MIDI support is just as important as the pro VIDEO support...
And I'm not buying till I know everything works... And not buying just because Apple says it will soon work... That's a pretty big gamble just to buy assuming that OS X will work with Audio/MIDI soon... And when it does... will it actually be rock solid... or just run ok...
We need firm answers... and soon... People are looking to make decisions... and this new OS X is keeping us all at a stand still...
I will probably be getting a new mac eaily next year... but... without these answers... I might end up with a $1200-$1600 mac versus a $3500 mac... Unfortunatly... my Mac musik partner... Is thinking the opposite... he is concidering getting a P4 and some crappy winblows software... That really stinks...
Just my 2¢... any comments?
