I got some video cds from a friend who just came home from malaysia.. i guess they're big over there... anyhoo, I wanna watch them, or attempt to... but when you pop the cd into the drive, there's just a couple of folders, with documents in them, and I don't know what kind of docs they are... umm.. I shoulda looked as i was posting this, but.. eh, it's Monday.. and I've been drinking.
anyone know how to watch a VCD? or what program does such things?
thanks!

The file you want is probably called something like "AVSEQ001.DAT".
Open that in QuickTime player
Or, failing that, view the CD as a list, sorted by size, calculating folder sizes... find the biggest file, and thats your movie.
Enjoy

The simplest way: get FreeVCD (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=7882&db=mac)

If there is more than one ".DAT" file then the first one is probably only a menu and the second one is the movie.
Apple's own CD/DVD Driver extension does not always allow for direct access to those files. If you want to use QuickTime to play them, you may need to use something like Intech's CD/DVD SpeedTools driver. Or you can use a VCD player you might find at versiontracker.com.
I'm not exactly sure why, but all of my VCDs have come from Malaysia too. Now I just wish Apple would update the OS X CD drivers to allow us to play VCDs with OS X. Right now you'll have to stick to OS 9.

I've never had any prob accessing those files.
Mine are all from Malaysia too... hehe.
In the case of menu's and such, just open the BIG file...

You can go here for a short discussion of the problem and a work around. http://www.mireth.com/text/macvcdx.html
Also, I haven't tried it but you might be able to open a VCD with QuickTime even if OS X doesn't let you copy the file directly. I found that sometimes to be true in OS 9. You couldn't copy an AVSEQn.DAT file to your HD but if you opened it in QT you could save it as a QT movie (be sure to uncheck save with dependencies). My guess is that you could do this from Classic then switch to OS 10 to watch the movie.
I haven't tried copying the files in 10 but I have watched a few movies previously copied to my HD. Looks great. But then, it looked great in OS 9 also. The last upgrade to QT 5 really helped VCD playback a lot.
It also helps that I am now running a QS 867.

I don't think copying directly has ever worked for me... opeining and exporting however does.
