Hi all,

Just to get my feet wet with video capture I picked up the XLR8 Interview. It seems to do the trick, more or less, and I've had fun learning how to do all of this (I mostly digitize episodes of TV shows then burn them on CD to watch on trips and planes and whatnot).

However...a couple of emails to XLR8 have left me with the impression that they're *not* going to support the Interview in OS X.1, and so now I'm wondering what a fairly cheap video capture solution for 10.1 might be? I'm thinking in the $100-300 range, and perhaps firewire if possible.

Along these lines am I insane or have I noticed that audio latency on digitized video is *worse* the more the audio is compressed?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers
Scott

I can capture video with iMovie 2 for OS X through my Sony Digital Media Converter. It is FireWire and altough the Apple Store and Sony say it's $399 you can find it around for $320 if you do some shopping. It is a little expensive, but it's worke very well for me. The only trouble I have is that it will not pass through a PAL video signal, but maybe that is not a problem for you (I have a couple of PAL DVDs and a region-free, Macrovisionless DVD player ;-).

As a bonus, it also appears as an audio-in device so if you have a newer Mac with no mircophone port you can use it for audio only.

I've been using mine mostly in OS 9 to convert some of my 100 episodes of Seinfeld to VCDs. I haven't tried making a VCD in OS X yet, I'm waiting for the final version of Toast 5.1 to come out.

How is audio latency with this unit? If it's good, I might think about saving my pennies...

I have the Dazzle Hollywood Analog->DV bridge. It is very similar to the Sony device and even offers a LANC connection for non-dv camcorders. I use it along with iMovie in OSX to video capture short video clips off my Tivo and VCR often. I've also used the bridge in conjunction with a composite camera as a makeship webcam using one of the several Firewire capable OSX webcam apps.
