How to quantify sound levels?

I've created a stereo sound file (using Sound Studio) in which one channel is minus 30 dB compared to the other. I want to have subjects listen to the audio and tell me if they hear the softer sound. The absolute sound level, though, varies with the sound settings for the Mac. How can I standardize the absolute volume of the played sound?
