Okay, I keep reading that if I want to play VCD's on my iMac, I'd need the $40 Speedtools drivers to replace my CD/DVD Extention -- but not only would I not put VCD above my DVD ability (I have the DV+), but their whole "it's not a bad price when compared to the price of the DVD modules," but I've GOT a DVD playing Mac! So... am I just an idiot and can the DVD-able Mac's play VCD's as well?

um... Quicktime can play VCDs...they're just MPEG files.

There are also other applications for playing VCDs... search on http://www.versiontracker.com for VCD.

Oh I know that Quicktime plays regular MPEG's -- but a couple of the VCD sites I visited had disclaimers saying, "This VCD is playable only with the Speedtools VCD player," or "Xing Mpeg viewer is required for this VCD."

What I didn't get was, if I've got a DVD player, shouldn't I be able to pretty much view any VCD? Or are these "special", requiring me to get some $40 plugin?

If it's truly a VCD, it's MPEG-1 video on a specfically organized ISO9660 disc.... no plugins required. Like they said, Quicktime and many other free players will play it.

Speedtools shouldn't be needed for anything.
