Can burn in Toast but NOT in itunes!

Why, I'm using an imac 400 running 9.1 with an old 2X la cie cd-r.

a pedestrian setup I know, but it works fine under toast 4.1.1, but then I tried itunes, first 1 then 2, and no luck... the drive is recognized, everything starts fine, but then the burn stalls 40-50% through every time forcing a quit and restart....what's the deal

I want to use itunes because of its interface and the fun way to create playlists, but it seems now unusable.... what to do??/ ideas, please.
