.......seems rather expensive at around 40$ US.

One end is the same size as what normally goes into a sound card, like an old fashioned earphone plug (mini-jack), but split into four sections, the other end has three, I think they are called RCA jacks, that would plug into a video or stereo system.

Would the version sold by a video store to connect a DV camera to a videorecorder do the same job?

Excuse me for being cheap here, but the purchase of the ibook left me a little skint. If I save a few bucks on the cable I'll be able to afford to hire a dvd to watch on the thing.

I own the white AV cable. I bought it at the apple store for $19. The three RCAs are video/left audio/right audio. Now for digital video cameras you'll need a firewire cable (smaller than regular)

I use my cable to export iMovies and such to my VCR. You can use it to watch DVDs from you iBook to your TV if you have that model. I think its a great cable. The one that looks JUST like it that came with my video camera dose NOT do the same thing.

Hope this helps

That was exactly what I needed to know, dammit.

Thanks.
