I'm in a debate with a number of people over something I read (still looking for link...) about iDVD and DVD Studio Pro. Is it true that the only way iDVD was able to encode at such a fast rate was because the software utilized the Altivec engine... I could have SWORN Steve said that at the Expo. That being the case, I though I read somewhere that the software would only work on G4 machines, not G3's. SO... if apple (for arguments sake) offered an external superdrive with firwire connection and iDVD software (as it exists currently) could I use it on an iMac... AT ALL? If so, without the altivec wouldn't burning times be unaccepable? If anyone could point me in the direction of a link that backs up the "altivec-only" argument, I'd be very appreciative! Thanks!!!

It would be insane to try to encode an hours worth of dvd via a g4 without hardware decoding involved... It would take something like a day...
