what the heck? it's an MPG file, thats already associated with quicktime
how do i fix this? or get a proper codec

Try demuxing the file, then use the Movieplayer app to copy the audio track and option-paste into the video track.
You can find bbdemux at versiontracker, just do a search. If you dont have the Movieplayer app or QT pro, get the Movieplayer app either from download.info apple.com (I thonk they still have the British version) or at homepage.mac.com/jacob_aberg, it's the file called "MP_2.5.sit-binhex.hqx".
