I've started doing some video editing on iMovie on my Ibook and 10 gigs isn't cuttting it. Can I simply add a firewire drive and have iMovie use that drive some how in addition to the main drive? not sure how I should go about it. and can I still route my DV camcorder through the firewire drive still. in otherwords still have the drive hookedup while I capture video.

FireWire is a bus. You can connect multiple devices to each port.

Check out this web page for more info, but I think the total number of devices is 63. any number of which can be computers (i.e. FireWire is Peer-to-Peer, where USB is Master-slave).

cool! now I just need to figure out how to get iMovie to use the extra drive space from the firewire drive. does it show up as available disk space in the available disc space meter in iMovie 2?

It's been ages since I used imovie. If I remember correctly. You should be able to change your scratch disk in your preferences.

To use your new disk in iMovie is simple enough.

When you start a new project, iMovie asks you for the name of your project, or "movie".

It is here that you can select you new drive.

I had this problem when I installed my new drive.

Drag your current iMovie projects (the conrol file and all its media folders) to the FW hard drive. One you open them, the increased space will be recognized.

I have an 80 GB FireWire drive that I use solely for iMovie projects. I can share it between my iMac or PowerBook G3, and it keeps everything pretty tidy.

Yeah I just had the same problem on my iBook 500. I got a VST portable 20 gig drive (that's all you should need) and it works like a champ. Just daisy-chain the camcorder to the drive then the drive to the iBook and start your new iMovie projects right on the drive.

It's all plug-n-play baby. (sorry for using that microsoft lingo)

what speed does the firewire drive need to be.
I assume there's no lag in the video when you use the firewire drive?
I love iMovie!
how much was the VST 20 gig drive?

Yeah the drive works great. I got it at the Apple Store near me, so it was kinda expensive I guess. But you can get a really good one at www.otherworldcomputing.com

i have been able to use final cut pro on an old-school (?!) firewire drive running at 14 MB/s...(use atto tools to test). [45GB/7200rpm IBM 75gxp in owc case]

most first generation firewire drives are suitable for DV. a newer drive on the oxford/911 bridge chip would be even better (and over twice as fast).

i dunno nothin' about those vst portables, except that they are expensive.
BYOFWD (build your own firewire drive).
