hi folks,

i'm looking to purchase either a canon s110 or a sony p1 so i can take some small video clips along with still photos - does anyone from their personal use if the avi format will play using my quicktime player and if so, is it a better format than mpeg?

i had a sony s50 in the past and importing/playing the mpegs on my pismo was no problem. i like the price and size of the canon but don't want to get an avi camera that i can't use. any suggestions?

thanks

I recommend sticking with MPEG.

.avi files are sometimes a pain on the Mac- some video and sound compressors are not fully supported even with QT 5 (as fas as I know).

AVI isn't a format. It's a wrapper, in which the audio and video sit, and may be encoded with one of many codecs...

You can get AVI's that are DivX+MP3, or 3ivX+WMA, or Sorenson+AC3... and so forth...

Yes, but I believe that most avi's and probably the one he is talking about is using the Intel Indeo Codecs which are availble as separate downloads from the internet. Just remember that you need all three codecs, 3, 4 and 5 (i.e. 5 does not include 3 and 4 for some weird reason) to ensure full compatability with these codecs.

Also note that the Indeo codecs do not exist for OSX, and are not likely to. That could be problematic.
