When I try to import some of my music collection into movies in iMovie they are greyed out and I can't select them. They are MP3 files and they work fine in iTunes. Why is this happening?

sometimes iMovie doesn't like mp3s that weren't encoded using iTunes. I'd reencode them with iTunes--you should be able to select 'convert to mp3' from the iTunes 'advanced' menu, then select those mp3s you want to import to iMovie (but are greyed out), hit enter/ok.
