Hi.

there is something I am not certain about. There are various articles across the net (search for FireWire license) which state that whichever device is FireWire equipped will cause apple 25 cents per port.
iPod, being the first HD-MP3-Player solution with FireWire challanges the competitors to come p with something similar, taht provides as much performance and therefore saves time and is more flexible.
The alternative to my mind seems to be USB 2.0, which is in no way comaprable, since it's not available, yet, and not finished, and if it works like USB 1 will never be as plug-and-play as FireWire.
but all this would mean that there are two possibilities, one is to use FireWire and pay the price to Apple, the other is to wait for USB2 giving Apple the advantage of being the only one that offers this type of performance.
Hence I thought that either way, Apple gains much more than just selling some cool MP3 player that Win-Users might envy, but gives a strategically advantage, and in more than the short run.
Why then do stock borkers advise not to invest in Apple??

Please, correct me if I am wrong about soemthing here, I am really at a loss and fail to make heads and tail out of it.

Stock brokers have short range, tunnel vision...?

Yeah, you're correct. However, a company can get around it by saying "Our new mp3 player, equipped with iLink" (then they pay sony) or "...compatible with the IEEE1394 standard..." and so forth.

It's if they call it FireWire that they have to pay the royalty fees.

You are right and wrong.

On the one hand you do pay for the name to whoever own it. If you bet on iLink you pay sony, for FireWire Apple and so forth.

But aside of the name you use you will always pay Apple for using the technology for Apple next to others holds patents that make IEEE 1394 and that's what I understand one pays the 25 cents for.

I've read recently that the licensing arrangement has been changed to a flat fee, rather than per port, based on big-time objections from equip. manufacturers. Still, Apple is probably raking in the dough on this... one hopes.

Hopefully USB 2 will flop big time and FireWire will become the standard...

Even after USB 2 is out, many not so high tech people will say... "Ohh, USB, isn't that really slow?" It doesn't matter if it was 100x faster the firewire... It will be remembered as something for mice and keyboards...

Stock borkers - sounds appropriate

The negative attitude towards companies like Apple baffles me, too. I've asked "why" a few times in e-mail messages and in forums, but never did get a reply. So, I concluded that stock analysts are (generally) moronic sheep.

Exactly... and call me crazy, but it seems to me firewire is the standard however you cut it. I have a hard time believing Sony will give up using "i.Link" for USB 2.0... and if they don't I highly doubt others will... it's not like this is Beta or something. Maybe I am wrong, but if I have to add a port for a firewire knock off I am gonna be ticked.
