I'm getting fustrated, how can I play AVI files on my system. Quicktime tells me that the video compressor required could not be found, and Windows Media Player tells me it's an invalid file format.

Quick Time version: 5.0.2
Media Player version: 7.1.3.0267

Any thoughts or things I can do to fix this? It's getting very annoying not to be able to play these formats.

WMP for mac can never play AVI files

open the file in quicktime and open the info window for it (command-i)
look for the video format. If it's:

DIV3, DIV4, DIV5, DX50, MP43, DIVX, or anything with the words DivX or 3ivx in it, go to versiontracker and download either DivOSX, 3ivx or Divx and run the installer and you should be fine. Alternatively, in OS X you can search for VideoLan Client and play the file through that (the other 3 are quicktime codecs)

MP42, you need the MSMPEG4v2 codec (OS X) or the old DivX Player 1.0b10 (OS 9, also requires WMP 6.3)

MP41, you need the MSMPEG4v1 codec (OS X only). MP41 and MP42 codecs are both on versiontracker

IV32, IV41, IV50 or any other IV**, that means Indeo Video of some version (the three major version 3, 4 5 are not backwards compatible), and you can only play them in OS 9 with the 3 codecs found at apple.com. search for Indeo; they're not hard to find

If it's something else, post it here and we can work from there

That looks familiar. I think it's w Windblows only codec. Do you have VirtualPC? For something like that I run VirtualDub (from www.sourceforge.net) and convert it to a mac compatible codec (see lucy's post for info on that).

Have you tried the new codec from DivX.com?
Since I installed it last week I have been able to play almost all AVI files I have found.

We installed the latest divx 5.0a2.....not one avi would play. No matter what avi file it is, qt reports "compressor cant be be found".

Tried the 3ivx thing, that never worked either. Tried with both 3ivx and divx5.0a2 installed an none of the avi's played either. The avi's are either divx3 divx4 or divx.

Will QT 6 finally make it possible to play these files? Nothing on Mac OS 9x will work that i have tried.

The latest DivX plugin comes with a 'converter' app for OSX that allows QT to play the .avi's. I know of no way for OS9 to play newer .AVI's
