Being as Apple has said that mpeg 4 audio is superior to mp3 I was wondering if it is yet possible to encode/ rip cds in mp4 format. Anyone know any good apps for this or is quicktime all there is.....havent heard good reviews of QT.

hmm....seems no one knows, well after a little net research I'll post what I found in case any ones interested in the same thing.

Psytel AAcenc - (for windows I think) has best quality sound. <a href="http://www.psytel-research.co.yu/aacenc.htm" target="_blank">http://www.psytel-research.co.yu/aacenc.htm</a>

QT 6 - uses dolby's codec fhg (same as liquid auidio codec). The preview is horrible as in many cases the program doesn't work, and the quality of sound and video is horrible, even worse than mp3. So much for "being all ready to release execpt for licencing issues."

Ligos Adobe Premier plugin - another horrid quality AAC encoder.

Its hard to find any good mac AAC encoders or the sourse code, so if you want to encode in AAC you will probably need windows.

I encoded a song @ apprx. 128k and matched that upgainst the AIFF and the MP3 file. I played all three simultaneously, switching back and forth and honestly, I couldn't tell the difference. Granted I wasn't using top quality speakers, but I was very satisfied. The mp4 file was also 20% smaller than the MP3.

I know some have had problems with QT6 beta, but I haven't had any whatsoever.

AAC in QT6 does not use a Dolby codec. AAC is from the FADS (Fraunhofer, AT&T, Dolby and Sony) consortium. AT&T and Fraunhofer have made 99% of the technical work with Sony and Dolby being mostly interested in solutions they have in-house. Dolby is the official spokes company for the consortium.

The codec is probably the latest Fraunhofer AAC offering - I tried some test material on it and it is clearly newer than their offerings from 2001.

Most of the AAC stuff you see on the net is real garbage .. this isn't.
