.dv is the standard format for home video editing.

MPEG 2 is not editable either. It would be depessing, if you would have to do a video project twice or more, only to have it for different media. If you want to make a DVD, you work in .DV (or HDTV etc. in professional workflows) and when your project is finished, _then_ you export in the appropriate format, in your case MPEG 2.

ahhh! thanks.......

so when the software is grabbing my digital camcorder's video [via firewire] is it taking the video into .dv format?

What resolution [video and audio] is the .dv capturing at?

The data in the camcorder is native DV format. When you transfer video from a camcorder to your computer using iMovie, or Final Cut Pro, etc., there is no digitization going on. All of the digitization has lready been done by the camcorder when the video was recorded. All you are doing is moving data from the tape to your hard disk.

In a professional setting, I think it's even possible to get a MiniDV tape drive to install in, or connect to your computer. This would allow you to move the clips directly to the hard disk without going through the camera. This has the advantage of being able to move your clips faster than real time.

The DV format is 720x480 at 29.97 frames/sec, and 48kHz stereo audio at 16bits.
