getting AVI movies to work

whenever i try to play an AVI movie from the internet (I have OS 9.0.4), there is no picture and an alert pops up saying "additional software is needed. unfortunately, it is not available on the Quicktime server ." I have IE 5.0 and have Quicktime 5 (it is the latest download from apple's site.) ANY help is appreciated!
