would recording straight to mpeg2 be a great idea? [microMV = sony = new format]

I would assume no.........

but if your end format is dvd, wouldn't this be best?

No editing on the Mac, though.

IIRC, the mpeg2 format will have interframe compression so editing at frame level could be problematic. DV format has intraframe compression so we can edit individual frames easily.
