I'm having trouble getting QuickTime 4.1 to open AVIs. It recognizes the file as an AVI but when it is opened, QuickTime Player says it can't find the correct compressor for the video. Sound is fine but video shows up as white. QuickTime 4.x does read AVI format, right?

Yes, 4.1 does support AVI's (at least 4.1 Pro does). Where did these AVI's come from? Or does it not play ANY AVI's.
If it says the compressor is missing, you are missing the Intel Indeo and/or Cinepak compressor. It may be moved or corrupted. Use Sherlock to check. Cinepak is also included with MediaCleanerPro4
There are also a great many AVI to Quicktime standalone converter apps floating around (using Indeo 3,4 or 5) (especially on Hotline).

P.S. It's well worth the $29 for QT4.1PRO

You need to download the Indeo Video system extensions from www.apple.com. These will allow you to view any AVI file format. You do not need to upgrade to QT pro to view AVI's! Contact me if you need add'l info

Hey Dark Half,
I didn't say he HAD TO upgrade to QT4.1PRO, just that it was worth it IMHO. I also guessed he could figure the download part out for himself. Great first Post, or was it your second?

I have QT Pro and I have the latest version of the Intel Indeo Video Extension; version 5.
Feathers: "Where did these AVI's come from? Or does it not play ANY AVI's"
QT will not play ANY AVI that I download. NONE, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA!
And where on cinepak.com can I get the cinepak extension? I couldn't find a link to plug-ins anywhere. I think I used to have it but may have lost it after upgrading to OS 9 (now running OS 9.0.4).
Thx!

You also need versions 3 and 4 of the Indeo video extensions. Version 5 is not an update; it is another set of codecs which compliment, not replace versions 3 and 4.

I also have had trouble with some avi's. After much research, I discovered that in fact there are some versions of avi that mac cannot run even with indeo video 3-5. Designed for Windows, they are simply not supported. The only way that I have found to run them is with a high level video editing solution, ie, Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro. So, I hope you have enough money or a lack of guilt when it comes to pirating.
Good luck, if you find another way, please post.

Is there a way to download a demo of Premiere from Adobe at their Web page? If so, I'll do that and see if AVIs work then. Thanks for all the help!

It sounds like you have the right setup, just are trying to play an .AVI that was compressed with a codec not available on mac (grrr). Quick lesson, .AVI is just a wrapper more or less (its just a file format, like .MOV or .ASF) for a video and audio codec. If the video codec used to compress the movie is a non-standard one (there's tons of them out there for windows, DivX being the coolest). For instance, .AVI's encoded with the DivX video codec (hacked MPEG-4) typically use MP3 for the audio portion, Quicktime has built-in MP3 support, so it has no problem decoding the audio portion, it just has no support for the video portion of DivX (get in gear apple!). Hope that wasn't too confusing. If you're interested in DivX, check out the MacNN forum on it at http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Foru...L/000234.html.

Hey e@home you're like a cracked record(remember vinyl) with this DivX crap. Do you know anything about anything else? I hope you're not a doctor, take two codecs and call me in the morning!!!
PS - I thought I gave you(iPond) this before, sorry:
