I'm setting up a streaming server for my college, so we can stream some college produced videos and possibly the school's radio station over the net. What do people suggest to use as software? I wanted to use QuickTime Streaming Server, but it requires OSX Server, which we don't have the budget for. (or a spare high end G3/G4 to run it on) I was planning to use our 8600/250 as the server.
So, What are my other options and what do people suggest? Thanks!

You can use the Darwin Streaming Server for Linux or FreeBSD. It's freely downloadable from Apple, down to the source code.

Yeah, I know that Linux is an option, but no one here has any experiance with Linux, Someday, but just not now.... Any help as to Mac solutions? We do have a small budget... How about the products from real? Anyone have any experiance with their products?

Do not use anything made by RealNetworks! All their software for Mac (and probably PC as well) has been really buggy. Their servers cost a bomb as well.

You need a really fast connection to host streaming. Sorenson Broadcaster enables you to do broadcasts, but for multiple recipients you need the Quicktime Streaming Server, which can run on Darwin (a small-ish download from the apple opensource server)

Darwin is horrid and unixy, but unless you want to run something like that, you will need to run Windows and a streaming server solution in that as well.

Darwin is your best bet, I think. It might take a bit of learning and stuff to set up, but it will be the stablest and cheapest setup

There has to be someone at your school that knows Linux... have them help you setup LinuxPPC on the 8600. It should run pretty good, and you can still run Mac OS based stuff if you get the Mac-on-Linux software installed (mol, maybe ask the Linux helper guy for help with that too)
