I have been trying to create a high quality CD slideshow that I can view on my TV with my DVD player. So far, all of my efforts (using Toast's instructions, or using iPhoto and/or iMovie ) have resulted in poor quality images. An article at http://www.vcdhelp.com/VCDmacslideshow.htm lists the usual method, which I have tried, and confirms that the quality is poor, due to Toast's VCD encoder. It suggests an alternate, multi-step method, using Virtual PC and some PC freeware, which results in really great quality VCD/SVCD slideshows.
If the Mac is supposed to be the "perfect computer for my digital lifestyle," there certainly must be a high quality Mac solution available. Mac users, please tell me how to do this without Virtual PC. Thanks.

If you can get your hands on FCP. It makes excellent slide shows.
Yes the technology for SVCDs is not directly in our hand yet but most people haven't even heard of the technology. Go to your local tech shop and ask if they can recommend a good SVCD playin DVD player. Thats right! you get the cheapest one in the store...strait out of China. If they have them at all. A lot of sales people wont even know what your talking about.
We may not get the first solutions but ours will be better.
Currently I make great slide shows in FCP exporting to toast VCD (mode=better).

Chuck,
Thanks for the reply. FCP is quite a bit beyond my finacial reach. Do you know of anything more affordable? Also, my Philips DVD player (Q50) can play VCDs or SVCDs. Apparently, so can many other players already on the market.

Try using MissingMpegTools and mediapipe. I have converted divx to very high quality x(s)vcd (720x576 25fps etc) and the results look great.
I haven't done stills yet, thats my next project...
It is a bit of a pig to use and does crash often, but just relaunch and try again.
A basic tutorial can be found at http://homepage.mac.com/rnc/
