I've been told by a (Sony biased) local camera dealer that when using a JVC GY-DV500 with a firewire into my Final Cut Pro I could experience audio sync problems. I have an iMac with 384MB Ram and a 60GB Hard drive.
Has anyone heard of this problem? If so, is there a solution that would allow me to use the DV500?

You're right it IS biased SONY misinformation. There is a half-truth though. He was probably pointing you towards the DSR-300 DVCAM Sony equivalent. DVCAM unlike standard consumer MiniDV uses locked audio - no sync problems (theoretically). The JVC GY-DV500 uses a variant of MiniDV that they call ProDV or DVPro which ALSO uses locked Audio. No worries. ProDV uses the same tape speed and track width as consumer DV so unlike DVCAM is VERY close to standard MiniDV.

Personally, I'd buy the new JVC GY-DV700 16:9 Cine machine which is excellent value for money compared with the far more expensive DSR-500 Sony 16:9 camera.

I have not heard of innate problems between the JVC and FinalCutPro.

PS - JVC and Panasonic being sister companies, Panasonic are shortly releasing their own ProDV camcorder as opposed to their existing DVCPRO range. WooHooo!

get the camera! it works great with final cut pro! it's the best camera i have ever used in all my years of doing video work. tehre is now sync problems with final cut at all. The camera dealer is an idiot for telling you that.

DV 25 is basically the same format across the board. It uses 5:1 compression etc Sony's DV CAM differs from standard Mini-DV because it records it's data to a wider track on the tape, thus (in theory anyway) reducing the chances of distortion or errors. You will have no problems transfering anything via firewire into FCP. In reality all you are doing is moving a digital file (stored on your tape) to your hard drive. You will encounter compatibility problems if you record on DV Cam and try to play it back from a deck or camera that doesn't support DV Cam.

I use both the JVC GY-DV500 and the SR-VS10 dual DV/SVHS deck and have never had a real problem with device control or audio sync drift ...
