i have a bunch of vinyl records that i want to make digital recordings of. anyone else have a setup like this and can offer some help as to what i should look into buying?
i think i need a USB audio input (with stereo jacks instead of the mono mic input on the imac), and i guess ill need some software.
anyone?
thanks

Do this- it worked very well for me, and not just for vinyl records. It works for any analog stereo audio source. Get the cord from Radio Shack that has a stereo mini plug on one end and RCA jacks on the other. Plug the RCA jacks into the "Tape Out" or other such jack on your stereo (you must run the turntable through a preamp) and plug the mini stereo plug into the audio input jack (it is stereo, not mono. This is a common misconception). Select "Sound In" and you are set to go. Sound In is a stereo, line level input. If you are not convinced, play a record with heavy stereo imaging or unplug one side of the RCA jacks and you will hear one speaker drop out. See? It's stereo. Try Felt Tip Sound Studio (felttip.com) for recording- I think it works great. I have made several CD's of some rare vinyl albums doing this, and have gotten rave reviews for the way they sound (anybody remember a band called The Phones?)

Go to macinstruct.com and you'll see a listing for a step-by-step article on digitizing lp's.

just wanted to say thanks to you all, especially Val. i went to radio shack, bought the RCA to mini jack cable and have already encoded a couple records using felttip sound studio. i already had the stereo stuff so it only cost like 5 bucks! a bargain.
see? a happy ending.
