I'm a video semi-professional, and recently purchased a Sony DCR-TRV320 to use with Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro. My friends in the business all have Firewire hard drives, and I knew from the beginning that the tiny 13-gig drive in my iMac DV SE wouldn't cut it. Here's the question: I've known for a long time I'll need to buy a Firewire hard drive to store digital footage, but I need to know which one to buy. I know LaCie and Western Digital are good brands, but they are quite expensive. I recently came across a Maxtor 80-gig hard drive for $400. This, obviously, is a great deal (and it's fast enough for video editing)! However, I've heard Maxtor does not make great hard drives. Does anyone have one of these drives? Should I buy it, or settle for a smaller capacity for the same price from a brand I've had more experience with? Any help would be appreciated!

I don't know where you heard Maxtor doesn't make good drives; they're popular replacement HDs for iMacs (I have one myself). The Maxtor FireWire drives are a little bit of an unknown entity because they were just introduced. But Maxtor is a good brand, so if the price is right and the speed is fast enough for your needs, I'd say go for it. Then let us know how it is!

I've actually decided to go with an OWC drive. It's faster and costs less. Only 30 gigs, but that's all I actually need at this point.

Kozmik,

Have you considered an ADS Pyro kit and adding any third party drive?
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.
