Choppy audio in iMovie

Hi all

I'm using iMovie 2.0.1 on my 500MHz graphite iMac. For no reason apparent to me, the audio with the video has become choppy, in that the volume seems to change between extremely low and normal. The resulting effect is extremely annoying, but can be reversed by turning virtual memory off. Does anyone know what could be causing these problems?

yes, virtual memory is the culprit, leave it off
