how to extract video from vcd & dvd?

How do I extract video into mpeg or qt format from a video CD or DVD? I need to retain the audio as well.. Do I need to digitise them while playing the disc or extract the video from the file in the disc?

don't know about VCD's, but you can rip the video and audio from DVD's using DVDextractor (do a search, i'm sure you'll find it). after extraction, you'll end up with 2 files, a video file, and an .ac3 audio file. you'll have to use another program (the name escapes me at the moment...anyone?) that will convert the .ac3 audio. then you sync up the audio/vido clips in iMovie or other program, and export to a format that you need.
