I have a 2001 iBook 500Mhz DVD/256mb 10GB Hard Drive. I'm trying to import a video into iMovie and I keep getting the error "disk responding slowly". Is the problem that the iBook is not up to the task? Anyone have a clue?

Plug in the AC adaptor, or, if you need to run from the battery, make sure the "Better Performance" is checked in the Energy Saver control strip module (in OS9).
I've a PB G3 400, and have had no iMovie import problems when I'm plugged into an outlet.

Ack, I'm not running OSX on my laptop, but there is the Energy Saving panel in System Preferences.
Try plugging it into an electrical outlet first and foremost. Rebooting into OS 9 might help. I think iMovie is a little sluggish in OSX when I use it on an iMac DV/400.

O.K. Now! I've tried everything so far I can think of. I've even Restored back my hard drive using the restore disks. Now that my iBook is over three months old I can't even get help from apple with out paying $49 or $250 for a contract. This is not a good start for an Apple Newbie. Sorry to rant! Just another clue, I'm using a Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge with my analog video camera connected. Is there a problem with iMovie and the Dazzle? Please anyone help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This should be very simple. It works on my wifes Dell laptop. she's starting to say I told you so. (I have also posted this cry for help on Apple's site)

I don't have experience with the Dazzle bridge, but does this occur after 2 minutes of import? 5? 10?
I read your thread at Apple's site, perhaps it is the firewall. Lowering the resolution and colors could help.

O.K. Everyone. I have returned my Dazzle and are wondering if Apple has a problem with the iBook and iMovie doing imports. The reason I ask is that I don,t seem to be the only person that has iMovie stop importing after just 2 or 3 seconds. Hey Apple have I bought a Laptop that does not do as advertised. If anyone out there has an iBook 500mhz that imports DV with no problems please let me know. Apple is supposed to be the platform for multimedia, I,m begining to question. Please help this Apple newbie regain his faith in Apple.

I have a PB G3 500 that imports DV through the FW port quite fine...
It just can't save it simultaneously to a FW drive if you have a canon camera (I do). Sony cams and FW drives work fine. Go figure.
Can you try importing using a FW camera? A 500MHz iBook should be quite enough to do the job.
Make sure you defrag your hard disk before you import. Don't give the drive and excuse to slow down. Turn off all other monitoring software and background tasks, try reducing the screen res to thousands, try setting the preferences in iMovie to a slower payback (skip frames or something) so the computer doesn't have to work as hard. It should work.

Please inform System Configuration
HD is 10 gig how much available space?
Can you run in classic?
Do you have QuickTime Pro?
Could you use S-Video?
What are you importing from? Camera? Dazzle?
Also link below explains the pros and cons of the Dazzle http://www.insanely-great.com/reviews/dazzle.html

My iBook has 6.4GB free, 256MB Ram and I've tried importing through a dazzle hollywood and direct firewire from DV camera. I've also restored and defraged my hard drive and still the same problem. Apple would like me to re-initialize the disk and restore again. I don't see how that could make a difference since I have defraged the hard drive. I still wonder if the 10GB Toshiba drive is just too slow.

I have the same problem when I try to play an imported movie in iMovie. I have no problem importing movies though. This happens on a Maxtor 80GB FireWire hard drive when I am running Mac OS 10.1.2 and iMovie 2.1.1. This was never a problem prior to Mac OS 10.1. What is the problem?
