I just purchased an Indigo iMac DV and am using an external FireWire HD (Maxtor 5400 rpm 27 GB in an ADS case) to store my iMovie projects.

When I run a project that was copied to the FW HD, the clips freeze (as well as iMovie), and I must reboot. The project runs fine from my internal HD.

Is the FW bus too slow for what I'm attempting? This is not a huge inconvienience; I'm just wondering if this is indicative of FW, generally.

BTW, I do have FireWire v. 2.5.

I have the same problems with my ADS case. I had to switch to the MacAlley case and use VST Firewire drivers. Thats solved all of my problems.

Is iMovie installed on the external drive? Is the external drive your startup disk? If it is your startup disk: is VM truned on? Have you check for extension conflicts? Are there any background apps running?

I was literally about to buy this enclosure (ADS PYRO) when I read this topic. I have read very good reviews all over the web, so hopefully these are isolated incidents.

Gordy,

iMovie is not installed on the external HD; the external drive is not by start-up disk; no background aps; VM is turned on.

I am running iMovie just off the 64 MB of RAM (I ordered 256 MB more; it should be here anytime). When it's installed, I'll turn off VM, allocate more memory, and give it another shot.

I might as well do Moof's suggestion, too. I've been shooting like a madman, and 27 GB is filling fast!!!

Other than this issue, my ADS case and drive rig has been flawless. Its original purpose was for back-up for my Pismo. I'll keep you informed...

Thanks for responding....
