Ultra ATA Drive and Frame Dropouts?

I have heard different opinions about DV editing with an ATA drive. Many say that the DV format works great with an Ultra ATA hard-drive with no frame drop-outs, like the one that comes with an imac. I know that a SCSI drive is pretty much a sure-fire thing, but I would rather not pay for the G4 and have a SCSI drive installed. If I plan on editing, using only DV format (as in mini-DV) and Final Cut Pro, say on an imac DV SE, what are the chances for frame drop-outs high? Any opinions are highly appreciated. Just let me know if you have had positive or negative experiences with ATA drives vs. SCSI drives.

I use FCP with two 20GB Maxtor ATA drives daily with absolutely no problems. DV needs a minimum of 3.6MB/sec sustained transfer rate. My drives consistently report 18MB/sec and up to 21.4 with video. Don't worry about using an ATA drive you will not have any problems. I recommend using drives that are 7200RPM and up but I've read even 5400 will work. Though I only have experience with 7200.

Thanks. This is good news for me, as I have a limited budget. I was hoping an imac DV SE would work for DV editing--at least until I can afford something even better.

I've worked on a 7600 PowerMacintosh during more than one year on SCSI Drives to edit my DV videos (with a Radius Moto DV PCI card). It worked, but with some trouble from time to time.
Since December 1999, I work on a G4 350 MHz with two Ultra-ATA drives. Even the 10 Gb 5400 rpm is faster than the SCSI in my 7600 PPC. The 2nd drive is a 20 Gb Ultra-ATA 7200 rpm. Everything works fine with Premiere 5.1.c, even with virtual memory activated AND AppleTalk Active....
Then, don't worry too much about DV editing. It's mature now.

Graphix states that video will work even with 5400rpm drives. I'm under the impression that the standard factory drive on the iMac DVs IS 5400. Can someone confirm either way, bitte!.

My iMac DV (grape) came with a 10GB 5400 rpm Maxtor. Not sure about the new ones.
