Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

Before it starts we need more people involved. i was thinking of having 2 categories, Amature (iMovie) and Pro (Final Cut Pro, Premiere, After Effects, etc). Post any ideas you guys get.

I'm in!

It would be cool if we had a topic too... Like best special effects sequence or something.

Good idea. I'm assuming that Moderators are ineligible? There should be a specified maximum file size, that's the real challenge!!! I mean, how in God's name do people submit their entries, and others view them? Worth looking into though.

Hi Bliz, haven't seen you in ages!!

This concept is way cool.

I don't know how many other ppl that want in this contest work for a DV place, but I do.

What would be pretty cool if the winner could get his company on the front page of MacNN. Have a banner that leads to your company's site.

Now I know that some of us might not work for a DV company or want to keep the front page of MacNN uncluttered as much as possible. But this is a pretty cheap prize for MacNN and a good marketing scheme for companies. With a lot of the DV companies using macs and visiting Mac Sites like this.

As for maximum size of the project. I know that I would not mind snail mailing a CD into MacNN or whoever is grading them.

So 650 Megs a good cap?

Give me your input.

brock

not sure file size should have anything to do with it... i've seen compressed files @ 650 megs that are 45-60 min long. (although i could make a mac vs pc movie that could last 3 hrs =)

i think a time limit would be much better. 30-60 seconds. my 2 cents..

My reason for setting a size rather than time limit is that the result demonstrates both:

a) An ingenious creative capacity

and

b) A technical virtuosity where the challenge is to achieve the best possible visible quality against certain restrictions that are all too real on the internet. Thus, the more skilled you are, the better you can compress etc, judge usable frame-rates and possibly produce your film to YOUR desired length and/or frame dimensions or aspect ratio.

I have always balked at creative restrictions like time limits. Imagine telling a painter his painting MUST be 2' square and he happens to be a very dynamic abstract expressionist whose works tend to be 8 feet by 14 feet!!! Geddit?

Of course, you can still ask what the difference is between a size limit and a time limit but to be honest, if you don't know or can't see, I'm not going to argue with you.

Stay frosty.

Well, it's on. If you would like to start working on your film, you can. There will be 2 categories and 2 themes. The first will be computer related (ie Mac vs. PC), the other will be "off topic" (anything and everything). Within these 2 themes will be 2 categories of skill; iMovie and Pro (Final Cut, Premiere, etc.) You can enter both themes, but only one skill level within each. Each entry must be under 20 MB and have a frame size of at least 320x240. It's is recommended that you use a frame rate of 15fps or higher. I will try to get the offical rules on the main MacNN page. Since it would take forever to send entries snail mail, it is recommended that you use a service such as iTools' iDisk or X-Drive to post your entries; since most e-mail accounts cannot handle big file sizes. After doing this send me (bizzare@mac.com) the url to the file(s). All enties will be judged by 3 of the MacNN Moderators and Administrators (including myself). Any questions, comments or concerns please post them on this thread or e-mail me (bizzare@mac.com)

btw, the compitition close date will be posted in the near future.

i have no probs w/either file size or time limit.. these are just opinions to keep it fair.

i was just taking consideration for the judges time and who's gonna flip the HD space for 20-30 650 meg (or larger) movies.

Also, keep in mind that some of us dont have high speed connections. Upping a lagre file can be near impossible. Which makes Mr DSL's project much better than Mr Modems in terms of quality and size

ok, i'm just ranting now. I'll stop! =)

for submission: how about hotline, carracho, or one of those FTP type programs.

If people were interested, I could have them all burned to a CD and distributed for something like 10 bucks (it would save a ton of download time...)

We totally need apple or someone to provide us with some hardware to give out (Mac iCubes anyone). Or at least donate some money to a charity or something (I vote Darwin UI Developers)

Mitchell out...

Prizes are still "to be annonced". The current deadline is Aug 1st, but that might be extended. Remember send all entries to bizzare@mac.com . I don't anyone to rip off your ideas, so all movie will be held in confidence until the winners are announced.

This is going to be great! But now it's brain-storm time...

How about a humorous video clip, in good old 320x200 (analog video captured with Interview)? Not DV, but it will deserve as much as the others

I will use Quick Time Pro, VideoScript and Strata VideoShop.

Just letting everyone know that the people at MacNN are working on prizes as we speak, and that the deadline will be extened. I am extreamly impressed at the quailty of films that have been entered. Also there has been lots of responce to the "Off Topic" category and little to the "Computer Related", so I hope there will be more submissions to that category. Please keep posted to this thread for future details (deadline, prizes).

Keep 'em coming.

Deadline is now Sept 1st (for sure). Prizes are TBA, but there will be some. Because of a lack of interest in the "computer related" category, it will be dropped if there isn't any submissions soon.

This topic's been mighty quiet lately. I guess Bizarre and Company have been busy watching all the cool videos.

Here's a question:
Who entered an existing video, and who created one (or two) just for this film fest?
(I did both)

Taloston Prez

I created for this festival, modified and greatly re-edited versions of things I'd made a few weeks before and put onto video in infinitely longer versions.
So I guess both.
Hope this doesn't disqualify me or anything...

Here's my entry: http://guitaradio.com/gr?tubewars@@

I'm entering it in the iMovie and off-topic category.

It's a stop frame animation short made using dupos(legos) tubes and star wars lego toys.

Hello everyone. My computer has been getting fixed the past couple of days, so I haven't been making posts. I received ALL entries, so don't worry The winners will be posted, along with the prizes, shortly in the MacNN Lounge. I hope everyone had fun making their entries, and I hope we can do this again.
