According to QuickTime Updater 5.0.1b15, QT 3.0/4.0 Pro users will have to pay again for 5.0 Pro features. See screenshots at:

is this news only to me?

I found out when I entered in my QuickTime 3/4 Registration info and it came up QuickTime 3/4 Pro.

I asked around and sure enough, I had to pay for QuickTime 5. But if you really like QuickTime (like me, plus the fact that I won't install Media Player or Real Player) I went ahead and paid for the QT 5 Pro license.

After all it's only $30. Plus the Registration number will work under OS X and OS 9.1 (when QT 5 is finalized for 9.1) So it's not a big deal for me.

It may not be a big deal to some, but this really bothers me. Why would Apple force QuickTime users to pay $30, AGAIN, to unlock all the same features we've already paid for?

QuickTime is my format of choice for online video, so of course I'm going to upgrade, but most of the world never uses it. This is not going to help Apple get back any on the great number of users they have lost to Real and Windows Media. If they really want to compete Apple should give away QuickTime with all features enabled, let alone charge for it at every major version release.

What more do we get for the extra bucks with this new Pro version anyway? Apple's website lists the exact same features that I have already paid for with QT 4 Pro. Only now they'll work with v5? What a gip.

I'm an avid Apple and QuickTime fan, but this makes my stomach turn...

I agree completely. Will I upgrade? Yes. Will I mumble dirty words under my breath as I'm paying out another $30? Yes.

I purchased QuickTime Pro when QuickTime 3 was first released (quite a while back). Apple threatened to charge another $29.95 for QuickTime 4 Pro when it's release was imminent, but they changed their minds at the last minute. It does seem a bit unfair to those users who purchased a Pro key just prior to the QT5 announcement, but they do have to draw the line somewhere. Perhaps QT3 Pro users (like me) should have to pay for an upgrade (I already did), but QT4 Pro keys should work in QT5.

Let's hope we only have to pay for the odd numbered QuickTime versions.

QuickTime 5: Enabling Pro Features

Apparently the cutoff date is Oct. 12, 2000. If you bought your key before that date, you have a QT 3/4 key and will have to buy a new one. If you bought one after that date, you have a 4/5 key and don't need a new one.

I wonder why Apple chose those specific dates for the license cut-off. Luckily I just bought my Pro license, but I'd be a little pissed if I had missed that date.

I read on the Macintouch page that if you keep the QT4 player app, you will still have its Pro features with the key (but not for QT5, obviously)

Also, if you mostly only need to do exports, you can use Movieplayer 2.5 which allows to do exports of just about any codecs on your current QT installation. MP2.5 can usually be found on EnhancedCD's.
