Ok, I'm new to digital video -- and I have a question about getting started. The question is probably simple for someone who's had experience in this area.
I have a DV camcorder that is one generation pre-Firewire. It's a sony, but with only analog connections.
I want to import from camcorder to my Mac. (And also copy from my Mac to the camcorder, which I'm sure is much simpler.)
Now, as I understand it, I need an analog-to-Firewire converter. The only one that I see in the catalogs is the "Dazzle Multimedia" converter for $259. Obviously, this ain't cheap.
My question is this: What is the best way to do what I want to do with what I have? Does it make more sense to get a Firewire camcorder on eBay or something for perhaps a little more than the converter? Or will the converter do everything I need (I'm a little worried about getting analog quality although both ends are digital). Or are there other ways to go about this that I should consider?
Thanks for any thoughts, input, etc. on the subject.

Get a Firewire Camcorder, It serves as both a player and recorder, and the transfer is lossless.
You will appreciate the feature of doing DV masters of your projects.

Just curious, what model is it? I've never heard of a digital (DV) camcorder without FireWire/i.Link connectors on them.

Try the DVMC-DA2 Media Converter from Sony.

IMO, the Sony converter, at $400, is just too expenisve. The new kid on the block is the Canopus Converter for $299. http://www.justedit.com/products/advc100.php3
Canopus is apparently a well regarded company for professional DV boxes. There is a review of this 'family' box here: http://www.simplydv.co.uk/advc100.html
It is a lot cheaper than the Sony solution. It has synched audio (which apparently is a big deal) and apparently, you can get a substantial student discount when you buy directly from the company.
It seems to me it is the better way to go about this.

New to forum and will try not to offend, yet have bought unit DVMC-DA2 at 315.00 and have seen on net for as low as 280.00
Also there is has been no problem in sync area or from conversion area. Use with Final Cut Pro and Premiere. Also use on PC side as well.

Yeah Jock, they work under 10. I took the 3 VHS tapes of my wedding and brought them into imovie under OS X thru a Sony box just before Christmas. Works just like you'd hope it to.
