I have a lot of VHS tapes filled with footage from my "regular, non-digital camcorder." I heard there's a way you can transfer VHS thru a digital camcorder, into an iMAC for editing (using iMOVIE), then back out to VHS tapes. Is this possible? The salespeople I've talked to don't seem to think so. Can anyone give me a heads up on the subject and a digital camera recommendation??
The SONY digital converter box is not an option for me.
Thanks!

The Dazzle bridge is cheaper than the Sony converter. http://www.dazzle.com/products/hw_bridge.html
EDIT: I have no experience with this particular product although I did use one of their other ones (USB, not firewire-) to transfer footage from my father-in-law's PAL analog camera so that I could edit his footage in with my NTSC miniDV footage, and then output it all to VHS.

Are you asking if you are able to transfer VHS tapes through a DV camcorder to an iMac and back? You obviously would need a DV camcorder for this. It's cheaper just to use a bridge if you don't need another camera and juust want something that will transfer your old media to your iMac. However, you could use composite video to transfer video from the old VHS deck to a DV camcorder to the iMac if you got one.

It's possible, if you want to take the time. You need a digital camcorder with analog outputs AND inputs. Then run the video and right/left audio cables from your VHS deck to the camcorder. You play the tape on the VHS deck while recording on the camcorder. Then playback the tape on the camcorder and transfer the footage to the Mac using iMovie. Once edited, use iMovie to save it back to the camcorder. then connect the analog cables on the camcorder to the qanalog inputs on the VHS deck. You can play through the camcorder while recording the film on the VHS deck.
