I would like to send my PC-using parents a copy of a movie that I edited in iMovie on my Mac. The problem is that they are somewhat computer-illiterate and installer-phobic so I want to have the movie run directly from the CD without any additional steps. I guess my best choice would be to convert the movie to a standard Windows media type which would run natively in Windows 98. Alternatively, I could leave it in Quicktime but I don't know if I can include a self-contained Quicktime player on the CD. Any suggestions?

Hmmm QTPlayer under windows is kind of outclassed by all the other available players as you can see here. Maybe just high-bitrate mpeg1 would be the simplest way to go... or maybe make a vcd/svcd?

If you have Quicktime pro export as .AVI, Windows Mediaplayer will play it...

yeah, honestly, quicktime on windows sucks. i would see if you can make it into an mpeg, and then your parents could view it using the default program on their computer, probably windows media player.

good luck,

WMP PC understands the .mov format. It comes with a codec for Cinepak and will also play .mov files you make with Indeo 3, 4 or 5. I would suggest you try Cinepak and IMA4:1 compressed sound using a key frame rate of 15 to 30 and a datarate of 100. I have made such files for my kids, who ignored my advice and bought PCs You could also just make .avi files but there you would not be able to use the IMA4:1 sound compression.

Thanks, all for the suggestions. I don't have Quicktime Pro but will try a conversion utility to make a MPEG or AVI. Too bad iMovie doesn't include any conversion options

You have IMovie you can export from within the program.
That would work just as well.....

I can't find any export options (besides Quicktime) from iMovie. Am I missing something?

Yes. You're missing the 'Expert' export options. From the 'Expert' panel you can select any video and audio codec that QuickTime supports (Indeo Video, Cinepak, MPEG, etc.).

I did know about "Expert" options, but I didn't believe that WMP would recognize a .mov file. I tried it with Cinepak compression and it did just fine. Thanks for the suggestions.

Go to File then draw down to Export….
From there a dialog box will appear in the center on top there is a POP-UP window you will see Camera. Click on POP-UP and choose QuickTime. From there you can export from there to many different formats…
