i don't use reaktor personally, but i have a friend who just started doing music, and his setup is an iBook, reaktor, and pro tools free. it's not a bad setup.(i'm more of a 'i'd rather buy outboard hardware than spend $400 bucks on a software synth'-type person myself) but of course you know, music comes from here (points to heart) and not from here (points to computer). sorry to get all philosopher-like
the only thing that i don't like about reaktor is it's copy protection: it uses a USB dongle. that means you always have to have this thing plugged into a USB port. i guess it wouldn't matter much if you have 1 desktop machine which you use it on, but if you have, say, a desktop at home, and one at the studio, you have to remember to bring the dongle with you. i guess you could put it your keychain, but who wants to carry that on their keychain?
so if you've played around with the demo, and you're comfortable with reaktor, then i'm sure it's for you. i would recommend also downloading protools free. everytime i use it, i still can't believe that an app like this is free. and maybe if you get reaktor, you should get some sort of USB MIDI interface and a controller keyboard, it would make playing stuff in reaktor and recording MIDI a lot easier than clicking a mouse. i'm using a midiman USB midisport 2x2 on my setup, and it works great.
good luck,
tr
