I know it will run on it, but what I'm asking is whether it is worthy of mid to heavy duty level FCP3 goodness?

Jansar: Are you satisifed with 1024x768 real estate for FCP3?
If so, then how can I NOT buy the iMac?

I tried FCP 2.0 on my TiBook 400 with 384MB of RAM, and I found that video playback was jumpy. Audio was out of sync with video, it was a mess.
Of course iMovie had no problem whatsoever. I tried giving more RAM to FCP, but that didn't seem to help. Now there may be tricks for tweaking FCP for performance, but I didn't find the trick.
I need to do a ton of editing in the next 12-months, so I'm trying to decide between the new iMac and an 867 Quicksilver. I want ZERO performance problems. If I have to tweak FCP to run on the iMac, then I don't want an iMac. Know what I mean? I want to access ALL the new features in FCP (along with all the old ones), and I don't want to see ANY jumpy video or out of sync audio, etc..
So with all that said, can anybody steer me in the right direction? I'm guessing the Quicksilver is the safe way to go, but I could sure use the extra money I would save by going with an iMac if it's up to the task.

Are you talking about the RT feature? If so, no, the new iMac is not RT capable. The video resolution is bad but I have managed to edit on both Pismo and Ti PB so it can be done.

The New iMac is most definetely RT capable. It easily meets the requirements for RT.

I've also used the TiBook 400 in the past to edit video in FCP 2, and it's always worked flawlessly for me. This is with 256 MB of RAM. Maybe you should try reinstalling FCP, or asking the guys over at 2-pop.com for help. I've also edited with FCP 1 on a B&W G3/350 when they first came out without problems.

I guess I'm mostly concerned with screen real estate. Is 1024x768 enough?

Well that's wierd. I've been using FCP on my PISMO for over a year with no problems at all. If you're getting poor playback make sure you're timeline settings are correct. Another problem on 'books' is the energy saver. Make sure you have all your energy settings set to never.
You can also check 2-pop for loads of info on FCP and powerbooks.
