I read about 3ivx and they make it sound real good. I also read about sorenson's new codec, and it also sounds real good. Has anyone done any comparisons with Divx (MS's Evil divx), 3vix, Sorrenson 2.2, and Sorrenson 3? Variable Bit Rate MP3's have been around for awhile, but the concept of variable bit rates applies to video so much more than it does to audio. Does 3ivx use VBR encoding too, or Just Sorenson. I'd love to be able to use a digitizer to record my VHS movies onto my mac, then encode them into single 700MB files I can burn on a Singe regular CDR!!

From what I've heard 3ivx uses variable bit rate encoding as well. It definately is a much smaller format than divx without a loss in quality.

Compared to Sorenson 2, 3ivx produces much smaller files that actually look better! Encoding and decoding times are slower than Sorenson, though (the next release, probably within a month, is set to change this). Can't comment on Sorenson 3 as I haven't used it, but from what I hear it's nowhere near 3ivx.

The major problem with the Sorenson codec is that all of the really good features are only included in the developers version of the codec (this includes VBR and MP enabled playback).
Now I assume that you may be able to tweak the content for the people watching your vid feed, if you have the dev version, but otherwise, there are limited user editable features.

How did you get the 3ivx codec? I've tried downloading it several times over the last week but the resulting file cannot be decompressed. Stuffit says it is corrupted. I've emailed them but there was no response. This is the 1.0d3 version. The OS X version can be downloaded and decompressed but I haven't had a chance to try that route yet.

to download the 3ivx codec, you'll need "Hotline Client", the developpers have released the 1.0d3b5 version of the codec on their hotline server.
visit their forum -3ivx forums-
and search a topic called <font color = red>"Delta3.5 is released, well sorta..." </font>
in this topic, you'll find where to download the codec...
I think that with a non-experimented eye, sorenson 3 and 3ivx d3.5 seem to be equivalent, but 3ivx change fastly...
(sorry if my english is not very good)

<font color = blue>Delta 3.5 is done and available, but not on the website yet because of hosting issues.
You can grab it on my ( 207.254.38.80 leech/hceel, 3ivx Stuff:Software folder) or Will's ( 24.29.148.219 matrix1/matrix, 3ivx Codecs:3ivx Delta 3.5!!!: folder) HL server. </font>

In my quick tests, under OSX with sorenson 3 and 3ivxd3.5, encoding time are suprinsingly similar (up to the second), sorenson having a slight edge quality-vise, but the file size is definitley smaller for 3ivx, something like 8x smaller than Sorenson.

The 3ivx Delta3.5b2 codecs floating around on hotline are an earlier beta version of 3ivx Delta 3.5
A final version will be released within a few days.

Hey Stux! Glad to see you here. Welcome to the Macnn boards.
I've asked this around the 3ivx forums a couple of times, without answers, maybe I'll get lucky here. Any time frame for the Altivec enhanced encoder?
Great work though. Is there a big difference btw the version floating on Hotline and the final?
