How much HD space does DV eat up. Everyone says it eats up a lot. But how much is a lot? Is there a formula for this? For example, how much per minute. I'm sure resolution has a lot to do with the answer, so how much resolution is needed for VHS quality video?

Typical DV format files are about 1GB for five minutes of video. A sixty minute MiniDV tape is about 12-13GB of data when you capture the footage to your hard disk.

Much of this depends on various compression. I just finished a 30 sec. spot. Saved out to an uncompressed movie took up 900MB.
My entire Working folder including clips, and audio came in at around 5.6GB
So you're gonna go thru drive space very quickly.

Comparatively, DV does not use that much space. Somewhere around 3.5-3.8MB/sec.
Compare this to uncompressed or MJPEG 2:1 (10-20MB/sec) and it really looks like a good deal!
Plus, disk space is unbelieveably cheap these days. Life is good.

Hmmm... 18Gb on a MiniDV tape? Would there be any way to use a MiniDV tape to back up data besides video? You know, as an intellectual exercise...

I understand how compression can affect file size. We are talking about DV however. In what format did you save this 30 sec, 900MB file?
The DV codec (720x480, 29.97 frame/sec video with 16bit 48kHz stereo audio) is typically 1GB for about 5min of video.
My entire Working folder including clips, and audio came in at around 5.6GB
This is also normal. Your working folder contains additional footage and audio clips, as well as still images (text & graphics), and render files. The working folder is always much larger than the finished product, or even the raw captured footage.
It is a good idea to have about 2-2.5 times the storage space for a project. For instance, if an hour is 12-13GB, think about 30GB or more hard disk space.
Using more effects, transitions, etc. will increase this ratio.
